•Leonardo was an illegitimate child born out of wedlock to Ser Piero, a notary, and Caterina, a peasant
•Leonardo had many siblings, but all were to his father and step mother
1467 Florence, Italy
Leonardo was kept away from his mother by his father and step mother because his mother was a peasant.
•Age 15: Leonardo apprenticed to Andrea del Verrocchio, painter,
•Exceeded Verrocchio’s painting skills
In Verrocchio’s Baptism of Christ, Leonardo allegedly painted the leftmost angel and some of the background.

•1472: Leonardo gets membership in the Painter’s Guild

•1476: Leonardo is anonymously accused of sodomy, which was a huge crime

In order to improve his light and shade in paintings, Leonardo would create a still life of cloth draped over something. Then he would put a candle near it and sketch the cloth. He would move the candle to different spots and sketch the same cloth again and again.

1502: Becomes Military Engineer for Cesare Borgia, son of the Pope, and his war campaign
•The Pope dies, Borgia falls from power
•Leonardo starts The Mona Lisa and The Battle of Anghiari (never finishes this)
1482: Moved to Milan
•Part of Duke Ludovico Sforza’s court as Ducal Painter and Engineer
    •Sforza commissioned two paintings from Leonardo: The Lady with the Ermine and La Belle Ferronniere
 
•As Engineer: invented war machines for use against French
•As Painter/Artist: Worked on a large equestrian statue commemorating Francesco Sforza

While in Florence, Leonardo had many disagreements with Michelangelo.

1516: New French king, Francis I, invites Leonardo to Castle of Cloux
May 2, 1519: Leonardo dies
