•Leonardo was an illegitimate child born out of wedlock to Ser Piero, a notary, and Caterina, a peasant
•Leonardo had many siblings, but all were to his father and step mother

Leonardo was kept away from his mother by his father and step mother because his mother was a peasant.
•Age 15: Leonardo apprenticed to Andrea del Verrocchio, painter,
•Exceeded Verrocchio’s painting skills
In Verrocchio’s Baptism of Christ, Leonardo allegedly painted the leftmost angel and some of the background.

In order to improve his light and shade in paintings, Leonardo would create a still life of cloth draped over something. Then he would put a candle near it and sketch the cloth. He would move the candle to different spots and sketch the same cloth again and again.
