National History Day and FCA Foundation Help DCPS Students Become Leaders
March 25, 2015, Washington, DC – National History Day (NHD) announced today at the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) Brightwood Education Campus a grant for $5,000 from the FCA Foundation (formerly known as The Chrysler Foundation), the automotive company’s charitable arm, to support city-wide DCPS student participation in National History Day projects, workshops and competitions.
NHD Executive Director, Cathy Gorn, made the announcement at the inaugural NHD student project showcase at Brightwood, where eighth grade students displayed and described to parents and members of the community the exhibit boards reflecting their research on this year’s NHD contest theme of Leadership and Legacy.
“NHD is proud to receive support from the FCA Foundation to reach a broader group of DCPS students who can benefit from our project-based learning program,” said Gorn. “We’re also grateful for the support we’ve received from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Motor Citizens volunteer program that enables FCA US employees to serve as mentors with DCPS students at Brightwood, and at other DC NHD events.”
The FCA Foundation grant also helps fund student workshops and the DC NHD competition held at the National Archives and Records Administration and assists with costs for students who advance to the National Contest held at the University of Maryland campus each June.
“The experience of creating NHD projects teaches real world skills that will help these youngsters succeed in life,” said Jody Trapasso, Senior Vice President – External Affairs, FCANorth America and President of the FCA Foundation. “By asking students to think critically about important issues, and see the world from alternative viewpoints, they’ll also become better citizens.”
