There are multiple methods of transportation available when getting to the contest and around campus while at the contest. Below are tabs that explain parking on the University of Maryland campus and the free NHD Shuttle Bus operated specifically for National History Day Contest participants.

NHD Shuttle Bus

Free shuttles for NHD participants will run during the following times (loops take approximately 25 minutes):

The College Park Metrorail (Metro) Green Line station is located a short distance from campus. To walk the approximate 1.5 miles from the Stamp Union to the Metro, turn right (south) at Route 1 to Calvert Road (across from the Quality Inn at the southern end of campus). Turn left on Calvert and follow this road directly to the Metro. To drive to the Metro, exit campus through Campus Drive (the main entrance), cross Route 1 (the road then becomes Paint Branch Parkway), then follow signs to the Metro. Please note that a Metro SmartCard is required to exit the parking garage. You can buy one at most Metro stations.

A free History Day charter shuttle bus will be available as listed below; it will shuttle between campus and the College Park Metro, departing and returning to the bus stop located across from the front of Stamp Union on Campus Drive. Look for the “National History Day” sign in the front window of the bus. Buses will make a continuous run approximately every 25 minutes on the following schedule. Seats are not guaranteed and you may have to wait at peak times. You also are welcome to ride the regular Shuttle-UM bus to/from the same location: The #104 operates between the College Park Metro and STAMP STUDENT UNION, and no longer serves the Regents Garage stop since the resumption of two-way vehicular traffic on Campus Drive in December, 2016. Parking on Campus

The University of Maryland Department of Transportation recently informed us of an error in the parking permits issued for the National History Day Contest. The errors were in printing only, all permits will still be honored for the time, location, and duration that the customer purchased.

The printing company responsible for creating the permits made an error. Many of the $40 parking permits say they are "Valid: 6/11/17" instead of the proper 6/10/17-6/15/17. Regardless of this printing error, the passes will be valid for the correct time period and should be displayed as instructed on the permit.

We were also instructed that some of the permits display a large SDG label instead of an NHD label. These, too, will be honored and valid for the appropriate duration purchased by the customers.

If you have any questions, please contact the University of Maryland Department of Transportation as we have no control over parking on the campus. Their contact information is here:

The University of Maryland has a complex system for parking on campus. Please help us help you avoid receiving parking citations by carefully reading this material and all signs around campus. National History Day and Conferences & Visitor Services cannot be responsible for parking citations of participants or their families, and will not pay for them. NHD has no control over campus parking or parking rates.

Residence hall guests may request a summer guest parking permit when they check in to campus housing.

Commuters and spectators may pre-purchase daily or competition-long permits starting now at Representatives from the Department of Transportation Services will be available at registration during the following hours to assist with permit purchase and answer questions: Saturday, 2:00PM - 8:00PM, Sunday, 9:00AM - 8:00PM, and Monday 8:00AM - 10:00AM. After 10:00AM on Monday, guests should purchase permits online or park in designated visitor parking lots and pay the hourly/daily fee. Permits also may be purchased at the Department of Transportation's office in Regents Drive Garage during business hours, 8:15AM - 4:00PM Mon-Fri. Please note for 2017: The Regents Drive Garage is closed for construction, however the DOTS office will still be open. The closest visitor parking to Regents Drive Garage is at the Stadium Drive Garage or the Paint Branch Visitor lot. You may go to for parking maps of campus.

We strongly encourage commuters and spectators to purchase their permits in advance. Please note that only credit cards are accepted for permit purchase at registration.

If you choose to pre-purchase a permit, go to and select the Buy Parking tab. Find the drop down menu to select History Day parking permits. Once you have chosen your permit and click the Buy Parking button, you may complete your purchase without setting up an account. Simply select "Continue As Guest.” When your purchase is complete, you will receive an e-mail with a PDF of the permit. You are responsible for printing out the permit and displaying it appropriately.

Short term parking for registration is available in Union Lane Garage across from Stamp Student Union on Saturday and Sunday. Late registrants on Monday or Tuesday will need to use visitor parking. The closest locations are the Stadium Drive Garage and Paint Branch Visitor lot. Since parking is limited around the center of campus, guests staying in residence halls are strongly urged to park in the lots as indicated on the summer guest parking permit closest to their lodging and walk to the competition sites.

Thursday Closing Awards Ceremony
Due to the construction closure in Regents Drive Garage, a significant number of faculty and staff will be relocated to the Xfinity Center parking lots. Lots 9 and 11 that in previous years had been available for NHD parking will be reserved for UMD faculty/staff displaced by the Regents Drive Garage construction. Commuters and spectators attending the closing ceremony on Thursday that have pre-purchased their permits (either the week-long inclusive permit or the one-day pass valid for Thursday only) may park in lots 4b and the Terrapin Trail Garage. This parking is limited and expected to fill. Overflow parking for those with pre-purchased permits is Stadium Drive Garage or Lot 1. There will not be on-site sales for parking permits at the Xfinity center for the 2017 Awards Ceremony. On-site permit sales will be available in parking Lot 1d Thursday morning. There will be shuttles running from Lot 1 to Xfinity. We encourage residents to walk or shuttle to the Xfinity Center and return to their vehicles following the ceremony due to the limited parking available near the Xfinity Center.

Cars on campus must either display an appropriate parking permit or park in paid hourly visitor parking areas. It is especially important for the safety and security of all visitors that cars do not park in areas designated as fire lanes, handicapped spaces, or service and courier pass areas. Parking in roadways, pedestrian walkways, or on landscaped areas is also prohibited.

For parking inquiries, call 301-314-7275 or visit the UMD Transportation Services website at . The Department of Transportation Services is located on campus in Bldg #202 Regents Drive Garage, College Park, MD 20742. Their office hours are 8:15 am - 4:00 pm.
